Anne Miranda’s inventive twist on a classic rhyme tells what happens after a shopper’s paradise goes “on the market, to market to buy a fat pig.” Back home the pig escapes rapidly, and soon the pig in the kitchen, the lamb on the bed, the cow on the couch – and the rest of the animals are raging all over the house.

This is a favorite of mine to have been with small children share for years. It is popular sung or read. The black and white photos from an old style grocery store with the expressive drawings are what attracted me. The children love the animals are hiding in the dishwasher to find cupboad, ect couch., Honing her eye for detail.

“To Market, To Market by Anne Miranda and Janet Stevens is an extraordinary extension of the common old wives’ tale. The joy of language is experienced because of the originality, lyricism, Rhymes &! Each child and adult, with whom I share this book in love with her! The colorful and complex illustrations are so delicious and imaginative as the language! The unpredicable and “messy” world seems tame, so untamed and, finally, sort of peace is made for all. The grandchildren will not let me get away from reading this. I have 11 copies of this book as a baby gift so far! Given! The board book version is great, and Hardy his preferred choice as mine!

I saw this book at a friend’s home when my daughter was 6 months old and fell in love with her. I bought a copy for us, and regularly buy copies for friends. My daughter, now 2 years old loves to read it and not go to bed without six or seven or eight pounds. To market to market is still a favorite.
